Yes, I Can Write

“I write neither about war or peace
War still returns every night, chasing away
that elusive peace
Yes, “I’m Nobody,”* but
“I can” describe,**
I can write
And I can sing,***
For the South Vietnamese soldiers who
fought gallantly on the frontline and
died unrepentantly in the Vietnamese Gulag.
Yes, I can sing,***
For the women and teenagers who fought alongside their husbands, their fathers and their brothers
to defend their villages
Yes, I can sing,***
I can write
for the dead.”
