Our mission is to produce difference-making work, focused on urgent environmental and social issues, that provokes discussion, inspires reflection and speaks to the times with compelling storytelling that is timeless.
Red Canary Magazine is an independent publication committed to producing engaging, deeply reported journalism centered on environmental and social justice issues. Our journalism is guided by an obligation to the truth, a loyalty to citizens, and a disciplined verification of our reporting. We believe in journalism’s social and civic responsibility in a democracy and the need to pursue it without fear, favor or pandering. Our goal is to bring our readers difference-making work that provokes discussions, inspires reflection and speaks to the times with stories that prove timeless. We are award-winning writers, photographers, filmmakers, poets and artists providing our readers with truth-seeking journalism essential to the survival of our democracy.
Responding to the dearth of compelling storytelling addressing the existential environmental and societal challenges of our times, we launched Red Canary Magazine to produce work of the highest journalistic standards that doesn’t take shortcuts with our practice or our readership. We do this because we believe that informative reporting paired with impactful storytelling has the power to effect positive changes in our lives and our futures.
The name Red Canary is symbolic for us. The canary invokes a bird’s-eye watchfulness while also exuding joy, optimism and resilience. It reminds us to use our voices to communicate clearly about pressing issues, to sustain communities, and to inspire meaningful change. It also reminds us to sing.
Red Canary Magazine provides important and compelling independent journalism that makes sense of complex issues and inspires greater understanding. Our vision is to turn information into knowledge and knowledge into wisdom as a means to inspire positive change and responsible stewardship of our communities.
The time is now to harness the power of collective intelligence to persuade individuals, corporations, organizations, politicians and scientists to take personal responsibility to address urgent environmental and social justice issues and to restore harmony and balance to our world. The challenges we face—as a country, and as a planet—call for an unprecedented collective effort.
We partner with our creative contributors, philanthropists, foundations and corporations to successfully identify and address urgent social justice & environmental issues. From grassroots to global initiatives, we leverage our collective intelligence to amplify the voices of those already working to catalyze meaningful change in our communities and our world.
There are many ways to support Red Canary Magazine’s mission: submit content to be considered for publication in the magazine; partner with us on a specific initiative or award funding; or serve on our BOD or Advisory Board. Please email us at tracy@redcanarycollective.org today.
