Community Guidelines, Editorial Independence & Donor Transparency

We welcome and value open-minded, rational and civil discussion that is spurred by our journalism and is aligned with our editorial guidelines.

Community Guidelines & Comments Policy

In an effort to provide a space that is equitable to all perspectives, we at Red Canary Magazine have created these Community Guidelines for our readers to explain what is and isn’t allowed on our platform.

Because we hold ourselves to the highest standards of journalism, we welcome suggestions for correction when they are accurate. Submit a request for correction to tracy@redcanarycollective.org.

  1. We seek to promote intelligent, open discussion of the topics raised in our articles. We do not allow language, posts or comments that promote uncivil discourse or:
    • Harass or demean others, are derogatory or insulting
    • Defame, use name-calling or personally attack others
    • Threaten harm or violence
    • Are obscene, vulgar or profane
    • Violate a person’s right to privacy
    • Violate law, whether local or international
  1. Additionally, the following type of posts and comments will be deleted immediately:
    • Posts that are solicitous, marketing or advertising in nature
    • Attempts to phish via links or other means
    • Any other type of material that Red Canary Magazine deems as spam
    • Duplicate posts
  1. We invite you to use your real name when participating in discussions. However, we understand you may want to protect your privacy and use a different name or be anonymous.
  1. We reserve the right to close comments if we deem all perspectives have been represented and the conversation has reached a natural conclusion.
  1. When you submit a comment to Red Canary Magazine, you will indemnify Red Canary Magazine, its affiliates, subsidiaries and their directors, officers, managers, employees, shareholders, agents, and licensors, from and against losses, expenses, damages, and costs, including reasonable attorneys’ fees, resulting from any claim brought by any third party relating to content you have posted.
  1. We do not edit comments. Comments are either published or rejected. You understand and agree that Red Canary Magazine is not responsible for content submitted by users.
  1. We provide space for a broad range of comments where readers can exchange intelligent information to discuss the topics raised in a particular. Red Canary Magazine reserves the right to remove any submitted content, including previously posted content, that it deems inappropriate, at its sole discretion and without notice.
  1. You have read and agree to abide by our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy.

Editorial Independence Policy

As a nonprofit independent news organization, we accept gifts, grants and sponsorships from individuals and organizations for the general support of our activities, but our editorial decisions are made independently. We don’t tolerate interference with or accept favors for our coverage and maintain a firewall between our journalism and sources of revenue.

Acceptance of financial support does not constitute implied or actual endorsement of donors or their products, services or opinions.

We may consider donations to support broad areas of coverage, but our organization determines the stories we pursue and maintains the high standards with which we pursue them. We will cede no right of review or influence over editorial content, nor of unauthorized distribution of editorial content.

We will accept anonymous donations for general support only if it is clear that sufficient safeguards have been put into place that the expenditure of that donation is made independently by our organization and in compliance with Institute For Nonprofit News Membership Standards.

Donor Transparency Policy

We are committed to transparency in every aspect of funding our organization.

Accepting financial support does not mean we endorse donors or their products, services or opinions.

We accept gifts, grants and sponsorships from individuals, organizations and foundations to help with our general operations, coverage of specific topics and special projects. As a fiscally sponsored nonprofit with 501(c)(3) status that operates as a public trust, we do not pay certain taxes. Fiscal Sponsorship Allies (EIN: 85-0839183) acts in support of Red Canary Magazine, a fiscally sponsored organization of Fiscal Sponsorship Allies. We may receive funds from standard government programs offered to nonprofits or similar businesses.

Our news judgments are made independently – not based on or influenced by donors or any revenue source. We do not give supporters the rights to assign, review or edit content.

We make public all revenue sources and donors who give $5,000 or more per year. As an independent news nonprofit, we avoid accepting charitable donations from anonymous sources, government entities, political parties, elected officials or candidates seeking public office. We will not accept donations from sources who, deemed by our board of directors, present a conflict of interest with our work or compromise our independence.

We want to thank The Annenberg Foundation, Metabolic Studio, The Henschel Family Foundation, The Bodhisattva Foundation, Luann and Bob Williams, P.C. Nguyen, and John Donnelly for their generous support of Red Canary Magazine since our launch. As founder and publisher of Red Canary Magazine, I, Tracy McCartney have contributed more than five thousand dollars monthly since our launch.
